My name is Daniel Ryan. I'm a composer and musician living in Brooklyn, New York.
Atha (अथ) is a Sanskrit term spoken in some cultures at the beginning or end of meditation. I use it here as a website and moniker. It is pronounced 'Ah Tah' and has many translations. Among them are "now", "the present moment", and "gathered forces". Sanskrit is structured very differently than English. In English we place 'ing' at the end of nouns and they become gerunds, active. So something that was static (or perceived as such) receives life. In Sanskrit nothing is static. I would not be "Dan", but instead I would be understood as "Dan-ing". This website would be website-ing. You would be you-ing. And the whole universe around us would be unfolding without stopping, even when it seemed still. The train of events would arrive at no station. The bond between man and nature is embedded into Sanskrit. We are, after all, a natural phenomena. And each one of us is to the whole universe as one wave is to the whole ocean.
In that spirit, it feels perfectly natural to me that I would make music. Music, like meditation, dancing or rollercoasters, is one of the few things we do for the experience. A song is not about the end result, it's about the journey and what happens along the way.
Anyway, the past is behind us. I believe the best of life is in giving, and by giving we live. This giving is my labor; and whether it is a labor of love or a grudging tribute is for me to choose. Certainly I shall eat the fruits, be they sweetened with devotion or poisoned with envy. A proper balance between giving and receiving is essential to health. Everything in nature is governed by balance.
If you'd like to work together, send me an email with some information about the project.
